While it is easy to be discriminated against at work, it is just as easy to fight back against those responsible. In some cases, you may be entitled to compensation for the illegal activity you were subjected to. What is Discrimination at Work? How do you know if you are being discriminated against at work? First, you need to make sure that you are a protected class in the workplace and that your employer is a covered employer under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As an employee, you may be protected against discrimination based on your race, gender, religion or disability. Discrimination is anything that may create a hostile workplace such as crude jokes made about you, sexual advances being made toward you or any decision made about your employment based on anything other than prior work performance. How to Report Discrimination at Work The first step toward stopping workplace discrimination is to report it to someone whom your trust in the company. This does not have to be your immediate supervisor. It merely needs to be someone you trust to investigate the claim in a fair and unbiased manner. This could mean that you talk to an HR representative, another employee within the company or a supervisor in another department. If there is no one in the company that you can trust, it may be a good idea to contact an attorney and check with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to inquire about legal action. How Work Discrimination Laws Apply to Your Case A work discrimination lawsuit is generally the last resort in such a case. First, you must show that you reported the incident and that nothing was done to remedy the problem. Alternatively, you could show that reporting the incident would have led to nothing being done to resolve the issue. Normally, you will contact the EEOC to ask that they investigate your claim for you. They will generally try to resolve the issue through negotiation and other informal settlement options. If it looks like such negotiations wont result in a resolution, you may be given the approval to file a lawsuit. Depending on where the discrimination took place and whether state or federal laws were broken, your case will be assigned to a state or federal judge. At any point before going to trial, you may settle the case with your employer. As part of a settlement, you may get your job back and get full benefits as if you never were terminated in the first place. Your attorney may help you with negotiations to ensure that you get a favorable resolution to your case. How to Deal With Discrimination at Work Being discriminated at work can be a mentally challenging experience. This is especially true if the person committing the illegal activity is your boss or another supervisor within the company. During the investigation, your boss and others may try to label you as difficult or say that you were to blame for what happened. You should also know that you may be forced to work with or close to the person who was acting in an illegal manner during the investigation. Therefore, you need to simply come to work, do your job and then go home at the end of the day. If you listen to the workplace gossip or try to read too much into what happens after your claim is submitted, you will go crazy. The most important thing though is that you spoke up. That is a victory in itself, and even if you are fired, leaving a company that would mistreat you isnt the end of the world. Being the victim of discrimination is not something that you want to go through. However, if you are a victim, know your rights and take action. Allowing your employer to treat you like something less than a person may embolden those committing the acts to keep on mistreating people. Before we move onto the answers, we’ll need to look at the difference between, compact, bridge, hybrid, and reflex cameras. Between DSLRs, hybrids, bridges, and compacts, you've got a choice to make. Reflex and hybrid digital cameras have interchangeable lenses unlike bridge and compact cameras.But the real difference between these cameras isn’t the fact you can change the lenses but rather what’s going on inside them. The sensor is a bit different depending on the model.This is the part of the camera that receives the light from the lens. The larger the sensor, the easier it is to take good photos (especially in low-light conditions). Reflex cameras tend to have the largest sensors (full-frame) and even some hybrids also have this.  Bridges and compacts tend to have smaller sensors.A hybrid doesn’t have mirrors in them but a digital SLR camera will. That’s why hybrids tend to be smaller. A mirrorless camera body tends to have a smaller sensor size.We tend to think that reflexes are the best for videos. Howeve r, it depends on how you use them. Of course, this is why reflexes and hybrids are great for professionals.There’s also a place for compacts, though. Some higher-end models can film in 4k and record at 50 frames per second. These devices are great for filming without having loads of stuff to lug around.Don’t forget to pay attention to the audio quality, too. An external microphone might be a good idea if the audio from the built-in microphone isn’t very good. After all, Hybrid, compact, and DSLR cameras are all designed with the photography in mind.10 Tips for Filming with Your CameraYou’ll need to know a thing or two about filming and your equipment before you can start getting good at it. This will work great for static shots.It can be really difficult doing travelling or tracking shots. Automatic focus isn’t as good in video mode as in photo mode. To ensure your footage is in focus, you’ll need to focus manually, which can be tricky, especially for beginners.Try making your static shots dynamics. Don’t always shoot from the same angle as it’ll make everything feel a bit monotonous. You need to move around and try different angles.Pay attention to the cuts, too. Cameras aren’t designed to shoot for long periods. In addition to battery life, you need to set up the camera for how long you’ll need to shoot.There are settings such as the framerate and the quality of the recording, especially if you want to film in Full HD or 4K.Finally, ensure that the lighting is right so you get good shots. Two or three extra batteries means you won’t have to stop when one runs out.The same is true of memory cards. Videos take up a lot of memory, especially when filming in 4K.Finally, I recommend that you invest in a tripod to stabilise your shots. Even if you’ve got a steady hand, there’ll still be some shaking. To get a good static shot, it’s better to use a tripod. There are also camera stabilisers you can get allowing you to move the camera while getting a steady shot.Don’t hesitate to get a backpack or camera bag for all your gear. Its not the side that gets talked about too much, but retirement is much more than a question of money. Clearly, you need to ensure you do have a financial plan for the day you decide to take the retirement plunge. Assuming you have some idea of the financial situation in your life, lets look at the other, more personal side. The quick answer to the question is: Not if you dont have a plan for the personal side of your life. Many people mistakenly think that the day of not working will be a glorious day. Whats not to like about not working? Actually, plenty. Up to this point in your life, your work has been the one, if not the primary source, of meaning and purpose. If you unplug from something that vital in your life, you have virtually unplugged yourself from life support. Im not saying you have to keep working, but I am saying that you can only play so much golf and watch just so much daytime TV before you start feeling totally worthless about yourself. There is not one aspect of your life that is not impacted or affected by retirement. Its a huge social impact as it will impact your relationships with friends from work and probably your spouse or significant other, family and other non work friends. It impacts how you define yourself and how you find meaning. It means that you need to find something to spark your interest and imagination. You may expand doing some of the things you only got to do periodically when you worked. You will also find new things to do (hopefully). Your financial situation may be such that you need to continue to bring in some income for a while, so what might that work be? Even if the finances arent an issue, you may decide to work but in a different setting. Many people heading into retirement think about moving to be closer to family or in a geography that better suits them. Then theres the issue of your health and fitness. You might have ignored that while working, but your excuse will be going away. Y ou have to work at staying healthy as you age. Are you getting the drift yet? There are a lot of things to think about. There are things you need to spend time thinking and planning for. This isnt a 2 week vacation. This is probably 30 years (give or take a bit). 30 years of your life is well worth the effort. If youre sitting there doing a self assessment and youve come to the conclusion that all your ducks are in order both financially and in your personal life, then the answer is: dont wait. This will be the first time in your life that you have the freedom to really choose what kind of life you really want to have. So, dont delay, your life is waiting for you. Taking the Stress out of Back-to-School Shopping With the first day of school just weeks away, its time to stock up on all of the school supplies, clothes, and accessories that your kids are going to need this year. Back-to-school shopping can seem overwhelming when your child has ADHD. The idea of having to keep track of an active, impulsive, and distractible child while also managing a long shopping list is daunting for parents. For kids, the stress, overstimulation, and temptations that accompany back-to-school shopping lay the perfect foundation for the predictable arguments and meltdowns. No one can avoid back-to-school shopping, but there are many things you can do to make it a more positive experience for you and your child. Design a shopping plan with your childs limits in mind. While you may be tempted to embark on a back-to-school shopping marathon so that you can finish everything in one day, chances are good that your child is not up to this monumental task. Instead, break the shopping trip up into chunks either by store or by category (clothes, school supplies, shoes, etc.). Plan to spend only as much time in each store as you think your child can reasonably handle. Remember that unlike typical shopping outings where you pick up some groceries or a few household items, back-to-school shopping requires your child to help make decisions about things youll be buying. Decision fatigue, and the irritability and frustration that accompany it, will inevitably creep in if you shop for too long. Make a list and let your child check it off. Creating a list for each shopping trip will help you and your child stay focused on the things that you really need to buy. Empower your child by assigning him or her the task of checking off items as you go. Better yet, have your child write down the price of each item as it is purchased, so that he or she can track the amount of money being spent. When children pay more attention to cost, they may be more understanding when they ask for something extra and are told No. Set clear expectations. Your child will feel more calm and patient while shopping if he or she knows what to expect before you leave the house. Let your child know which stores youll be visiting, how long youll be shopping, and what youll be buying (only items on the shopping list!). Be prepared to help your child deal with temptations. When a store is filled with temptations, your child is going to see many things that he or she would like to buy that arent on the list. It hard for kids to be surrounded by so many things that they cannot have, and this is especially true for more impulsive kids who have ADHD. You cant remove the temptations, but you can help your child cope with his or her impulsive feelings and the need to have so many things that he or she sees: Create opportunities for choices. Empower your child by allowing him or her to make choices about the things that he or she is able to have. Let your child pick out his or her favorite notebooks, pencils, erasers, backpack, etc. If having too many options is overwhelming for your child, then point out two or three items that are a good fit for your childs needs and your familys budget, and allow your child to choose from this smaller selection. Add extra items to a birthday, holiday, or future rewards list. Spending time shopping with your child actually provides an excellent opportunity for you to learn about things that he or she may want to earn as rewards for meeting behavior goals, or receive as gifts on his or her next birthday or holiday. So, if your child sees something that he or she wants, let him or her know that he or she cant have it now, but he or she can add it to the reward or gift list. Some kids like to create the list as they shop, and others like to write out the full list from memory when they get home. Praise your child. When youre busy and stressed it can be easy to focus on all of the things that your child is doing wrong and forget to focus on everything that he or she is doing right. So, make a conscious effort to notice the times when your child calmly puts something back after he or she was told that he or she couldnt have it or when he or she stayed by your side instead of wandering off. Praise your child and let your child know that you appreciate the way that he or she is behaving. Also acknowledge that its not always easy to follow the rules and accept tough decisions on school shopping days. The more positive attention your child receives from you, the more likely he or she will be to meet your expectations and enjoy the experience. Back-to-school shopping isnt easy for kids with ADHD or their parents. But when youre prepared with a few key strategies and solid shopping plan youll be able to get your child everything that he or she needs and may even enjoy each others company along the way. Tutoring In Schools One-to-One Tuition Even experienced tutors can struggle when starting to deliver sessions in schools. Tutoring in-school means being particularly mindful of how your sessions fit into a student’s school life and tailoring your approach accordingly. This sounds easy enough in theory, but what does it mean in practice?   This week, we’re looking at one-to-one tutoring. Across the Foundation team, we’ve seen more than our fair share of this in dozens of schools across the country, which means we’ve seen how things most often go wrong - and how the best tutors get it right. We’ve compiled a list of the five things tutors should definitely be doing when they work one-to-one in schools. Staying positive about maths lessons After a few weeks with a new student, it’s common to hear that they love attending the sessions. ‘You explain things so well,’ they’ll say, ‘everything seems so easy when you go through it.’ You swell with pride and give a gracious acceptance speech â€" humbly acknowledging an adoring crowd as you accept your Tutor of the Decade award. Then, inevitably…   ‘You’re so much better than Mr Clarke. He goes through everything too fast and can’t even explain it well. I don’t understand him. He’s a rubbish teacher â€" I much prefer coming here. Can I come here for every lesson?’ And you’re back in the room with a thud, standing at a very important crossroads.   Tutors should be prepared for this possibility â€" mindful not to let the student develop an unhealthy dependence on sessions and always ready with the right words should they hear any negativity towards teaching staff. The purpose of your sessions is as much to improve your student’s attitude towards their regular lessons as it is to improve their subject knowledge in its own right.   Connecting sessions to classwork   It’s all too easy for progress made in tutoring sessions to stay in tutoring sessions. Consistently, evidence shows that tutoring interventions are more effective when they’re meaningfully connected to students’ regular lessons â€" allowing them to feel the benefit of the additional work when they’re back in the classroom. This is particularly important to remember for tutors in schools, where students can feel particularly disorientated by contrasting approaches to a subject. They might be told in their lesson to use one approach for a certain problem, only to have that contradicted in their tutoring session. What to do? Who to trust? Maybe their tutor wants to cover a different topic altogether â€" something they’ve not come across yet that won’t be covered in lessons for a few weeks. Will they feel that progress back in the classroom? Tutors working in schools should be building a relationship with the teaching staff of the relevant department. It’s important to know what was covered in your student’s last lesson and what will be covered in their next. If it’s a tricky topic, what method is the teacher using? If you’re not familiar with it, take some time to get used to it before the session. Ensuring your approach connects meaningfully with classwork will drastically improve the impact of the sessions in both the short and the long term. Personalising topics The great power of one-to-one tuition is the personalisation of content. When working with just one student at a time, every topic can be approached with that student’s experience and personal difficulties in mind. This is the mechanism that makes one-to-one sessions so impactful, with students able to make meaningful progress much quicker than they might be used to. When working in schools, the particular topics, resources or methods to be covered might come from teaching staff. Whilst this is a really important aspect of in-school tuition, it shouldn’t cause tutors to forget to personalise teaching for each student. Take the time to get to know your tutees â€" what are their hobbies? What subjects do they like best? Which of the fundamentals of this subject have they never felt comfortable with? Start every session with a warm-up to see how they’re feeling today and ground every task in something that connects to your student. Balancing ‘friendly’ with ‘focus’ One of the things we get asked about the most during training sessions is how to tread the fine line between a fun atmosphere and a focused lesson. For inexperienced tutors, it’s all too easy to take a ‘matey’ approach in early sessions that leads to behavioural issues after a few sessions. Or, by contrast, to overthink the thing and come off too stern in the first hour and put their student off. Here’s what we recommend. Remember that you have an obligation to be warm, kind, friendly and supportive. Don’t try to take a stern or disciplinary approach â€" it’s just not what you’re there to do. However, your student knows the rules and so should you. If you encourage rule-breaking in your sessions (think lateness, bad language, etc.) it’s no longer clear where the line is, which can lead to small losses of control down the line.   Most importantly, keep your promises. If you say something’s going to happen it has to happen. Good, bad or indifferent, if you’ve made a promise you have to keep it. As long as you tread that line, your students will know that (although you’re friendly) you’re to be taken seriously â€" and at the end of the day what you say goes! Keeping records and feeding back It’s really important to discuss student progress with teaching staff. They’ll want to know how students are getting on in sessions and you should always be prepared to have that conversation. By talking to teachers, you might be able to pick up some information about what your students have been struggling with in lessons or whether they’re showing signs of improvement in class. All of this means taking detailed notes of what happens in sessions. Not only so you have a record of what topics you’ve covered (trust me, you’ll forget!) but so that you can come back to little mistakes in later sessions to reinforce learning. Your notes will be an invaluable basis for planning sessions, sharing progress with teachers and giving meaningful, responsive feedback to students. Word to the wise: never take your session notes off-site â€" that’s not the kind of thing you want to leave on the bus!
